The paper said that General Motors Corp (GM) has approved the request by BAIC. The Beijing-based auto maker is preparing a detailed bid to compete with Canada’s Magna International Inc.

The auto maker will send a delegation to Germany in the next two weeks. In the meantime, BAIC Chairman Xu Heyi will seek support for the acquisition from employees, trade unions and politicians, the German newspaper said in the report.

Reuters earlier reported that BAIC had hired PriceWaterhouse Coopers (PWC) to advise on the possible acquisition and to study Opel’s finances.

BAIC sold 366,000 vehicles in the first four months of this year, 21.5% more than in the same period of last year. Profits jumped 56.3% year on year to RMB 1.34 billion and sales revenues rose 12% year on year to RMB 31.54 billion in the same period.

The company aims to sell more than 2 million vehicles in 2009, and to realize RMB 240 billion in sales and RMB 720 million in profit.
